GENETICSby Wendy A.
I keep saying that I am open to posting commentary by other people, if I feel that it would be of help to anyone. This article is one such example.
Dear LadyWingMaker, having read through levels 2 and 3, I have a few comments regarding genetics. I will be as brief as I can (I hate long windedness). What I have to say now is really really important so please bare with me. When I took genetics at University (1985) we were taught that each gene coded a different protein and our genome determined who we were today as well as who we would become (more or less), and the race was on to map the human genome. It was accepted dogma that the degree of biological compexity an organism had was porportional to the number of genes in its genome, mathamatically it was expected that about 100,000 human genes would be discovered, but infact the human genome is only about 34,000 genes. (the micrscopic roundworm has a total of exactly 969 cells and 18,000 genes. The eye of a fruit fly has more cells then the roundworm has in total, but the fruitfly has 13,000 genes). This also dispells the one gene >one protein thing (we have 70,000-80,000 different proteins). This would be hilarious if it wasn't for the zillions of dollars spent mapping the genome. In response to the surprising findings this big guy geneticist noble prize winner etc said: "But unless the human genome contains a lot of genes that are opaque to our computers, it is clear that we do not gain our undoubted complexity over worms and plants by using more genes. Understanding what does give us our complexity-our enormous behavioral repertoire, ability to produce conscious action, remarkable physical coordination, precisely tuned alterations in response to external variations of the environment, learning, memory…need I go on?-remains a challenge for the future." (Nature 409:816, 2001) This is HUGE. While most geneticist were racing to the finish line of the Human Genome Project, there were others conducting research that was being published in peer reviewed journals, but for the most part ignored by the scientific community. The premise had always been that the cell's nucleus (containing DNA) was the cell's brain or "the 5 Star General" but it has been shown that if you remove a cells nucleus, the cell will continue functioning for up to 2 months. The brain or 5 Star General of the cell is not the DNA, but is the cell membrane and specifically receptor and effector proteins embedded within the membrane (it's worth pointing out the the only link between all organisms is the same cell membrane). It was also beleived that receptor proteins only responded to matter (ions, other molecules etc), and this is not the case, cell membranes also respond to energy, and whether they are responding to matter or energy they respond to what they perceive the stimuli to be (perception is a choice and it is created by our beliefs). Cells have conscieness!! If a cell membrane perceives an unknown stimuli, it will react by directing other proteins to change a particular gene to code for a new protein (mutation/evolution). Mutations are not random, but are directed by our cells conscieness, in response to a perception (belief) about it's enviroment. So simply put: Beliefs (learned) >>>>> Perception (choice) >>>>>>> Reality! Cells move in 2 directions - either receding to provide protection or growth/evolution, but they cannot move in both directions at the same time. I find this almost mind blowing - if you take the micromolecular and enlarge it to the person/society size. Consider what would happen if people shifted from protection mode (wars and acts of terrorism are good for inducing protection mode) to growth/evolution mode. If people understood that they could infact direct their genetic expression and thus personal evolution and reality, through their learned belief system. It doesn't take a huge leap to guess what this would mean to the very fabric of society, as well as world politics and economics. What does mean to indigoness? I'm not sure, but the more I learn about indigo, the more questions are surfacing just beneath my conscienceness. I heard that there has been a movie release about indigo. I think I need to go see it, and try to discover what message this movie is trying to deliver to "Joe Public", as well as the message behind the message - does making a movie based on a fictional story (hollywooding something) make it more real or less real, or does it effect some other type of response? I can be fairly objective, for many years it's rare that I read a newspaper, watch TV or listen to the radio, so I'm not media overloaded. I don't know alot about most things but I do know that right now this second, I'm getting out of my head for a while and back into my little life where my biggest concerns revolve around robbing Peter to pay PAUL to pay my telephone bill, how to fix my washing machine AGAIN, and what to cook (reheat rather) for dinner. I would love to learn what thoughts this generates for you. Sorry this was so long, it was unavoidable. Regards, Wendy LWM writes: Wendy, there is so much I want to say on this subject and will get back to you.
