CHILDREN / ADULTS & ADHD
(If it is underlined, it is a link) In my therapy practice several years ago, I couldn't believe the number of parents who treated their children like they had ADHD just because the child was being a child. Have you forgotten how you were as a child? Have you forgotten how goofy you could get if allowed to? Have you forgotten what it was like to spend hours daydreaming? Have you forgotten how much you might have disliked school and how no one understood you just because you weren't able to do all the problem solving expected of you at the time? Childhood is the most precious time of our lives so do not take your child's childhood away just because you are intolerant of their being a child. If you suspect ADHD, do not self-diagnose it. Take your child to a competent medical person who specializes in ADHD. You are your child's best advocate - act like it and take the job of parenting with dead seriousness, after all you have been entrusted with a spark of life who you will ultimately be held accountable for when he or she grows up. If you think of parenting in that way, you will take it much more serious than before. ADHD is a serious disorder and not to be taken lightly. If more people would stop labeling their children with this disorder the kids would be much better off and the adults would really gain from it. There is so much more involved in ADHD than most parents would think of, therefore, before applying the ADHD label to your child, seek professional help. There is a list of who can help, found on the Diagnosis page. There is a big difference between thinking your child is ADHD and having him or her screened by a competent medical doctor specializing in ADHD to prove or disprove your theory. I get tight jawed when a parent says their child is ADHD yet has never had the child tested to prove it. We are living in an age where there is so much information via the Internet (or where ever) that leads people to believe certain things just because they read it. Because of that, I am not going to waste my time writing about ADHD, and am instead going to provide some of the best information I have found to date. If you cannot afford to get your child properly tested then for Pete's sake, stop labeling the child, because what you call him/her, they will become! It's called the Self-fulfilling Prophecy (or the Pygmalion Effect). If you act like and treat kids like they are ADHD - they will be ADHD!!! If you treat them like they have a learning disorder - they will have it!!! And on, and on, and on!!! ADHD - Attention Dialed to a Higher Dimension: I can't remember where I read that but it is not my quote. It is on one of the other Indigo sites, and I apologize for not giving credit where it is due. If anyone knows who coined this phrase, please let me know, I will credit it to them. For the article on Attention Dialed to a Higher Dimension please read ADHD - Indigo.
