INDIGO ADULTS
Indigos are found in all races and in all walks of life. There are no boundaries to where you will find them, just like anyone else. And keep in mind that this is the beginning list of indicatiors as to how to identify an Indigo, so this list might pertain to many other types of people at first. The revised list of traits will be posted in a later level, and pertain to pure Indigo's. 1. The mind of an Indigo adult is not like any other. The Indigo adult has a nervous and psychic system that's hardwired for tremendous amounts of informational input. They are extremely right brain oriented and they live in a sort of high speed awareness which quite often is misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). I read on another web site that a person calls it Attention Dialed to a Higher Dimension, and I am here to tell you that nothing makes more sense than that, so remember it, especially if you are having trouble with an Indigo child, or if you've been a wavering Indigo Adult. You are Attention Dialed to a Higher Dimension. And when I say extremely right brain oriented I want you to understand something very new. It is said that left brain work is very analytical and that right brain is very creative. From that you would get the impression that a right brained person wouldn't be able to do much computer programming or anything that is generally seen as left brain careers. But I am here to tell you that it takes a super right brain ability to do computer programming or web design, or anything else similar BECAUSE it all has the end result of using creativity to the max! So do not rule yourself out if you think you are a left brain kind of person. Give this more thought. 2. Observant / Aware. An Indigo is incredibly observant and aware. They usually have penetrating eyes that can see right through a person, and I don't mean their look. I mean they can see what others can't, and they don't have to stare to see it. They don't miss a thing. And because they are usually in hyper speed, often a glance will suffice. Because of this awareness, the Indigo Adult they can be blunt, opinionated, perhaps a bit judgmental, and their comments can accidentally be seemed as offensive or intolerant. They don't mean it that way, it's just that they have the ability to get to the root of anything quickly and hate wasting time on social games. This is also called tactless, and it prompts them to become rule breakers. If the Indigo adult did not get the proper training when a child, this behaviour can seem quite upsetting and obnoxious to to others. It's never too late to learn good manners and politeness goes a long way toward your social survival. 3. Indigos might have a problem with anger and rage. Older Indigos who haven't dealt with the hurts of childhood will discover that they might still have an undo amount of anger and rage pent up inside of them, and it will surface when least expected, or it comes out in the physical body via illness and/or disease. Remind yourself that the past is past and you can safely move beyond it now. 4. "Why?" If an Indigo adult asks why, be it professionally or personally, it's because they are genuinely curious to learn, and they will ask why, all their life. In fact, they ask why of everything, especially life. This trait will rule their lives until they are able to move beyond the earthly practice of obscuring the real answer with too many 'whys'. 5. Invention and creation. Creating and inventing might seem left brain oriented, but they really aren't at least not to an Indigo. Inventing a shortcut is really just a way of getting through a task faster, which is the Indigo way. 6. No middle road. Indigos are generally happy with cooperative endeavors, as long as it's truly cooperative, meaning that everyone carries the same load. They also thrive in leadership positions, as long as you realize that they usually lead from behind. In other words, they can get an entire group/endeavor to succeed, but not because they are in front dictating orders, but because they will be in the thick of things, or back with the slow poke, encouraging everyone to keep going for the good of all. The opposite end of the spectrum is that they also love to work alone. This comes from the fact that not many understand them, and it's more of a burden to explain something than to simply do it. And because they are Attention Dialed to a Higher Dimension, working alone allows them the contact with that ‘out there' mind of theirs and it's as healing as it is nurturing. 7. Intolerant of stupidity but also have deep empathy. Indigos see stupidity not as ignorance but as a chosen way of thinking, therefore it triggers intolerance. Ignorance is simply a lack of knowledge and we respect that in a person. We also have a deep, deep empathy for the world, in a manner of speaking. This is what leads many of us to be writers or artists, or communicators in whatever way we can. We are the ones who, as a child, won't laugh at a cripple or tease the ugly duckling in school. But then again, we're usually the ones teased and isolated from our so called peers. 8. Resent Authority. It isn't so much that Indigos resent authority or authority figures, it's that we naturally challenge people who are otherwise grounded in their own earthly belief systems. Because Indigos see things differently than others we tend to ask impossible questions of anyone, to include religious teachers and ministers. Authority figures have to earn our trust and respect, and the only way is through honesty. We want to know the ‘whys' behind the scheme of things to include wanting to know about the person behind that cloak of authority. Because of our other talents (keep reading below) we will sense deceit, et al. Do not tell Indigo Children or Adults "because I say so." Along these lines it is imperative to teach your Indigo Child that submission to recognized authority figures is not an arbitrary rule, but that it's a necessity if they are expected to live in their society. But, do this without compromising their sense of moral righteousness. Remember, "When knocked down, we can get back up, but when knocked down by conformity, we are down for good." One time, when I was 5 years old, my dad had returned home from an obviously hard day at the flightline, and told me to put my toys away. He treated us kids like little tin soldiers so I naturally responded as such. I told him they weren't mine and I didn't have to pick up after my younger brother. Dad didn't like my staunch refusal to obey his orders so he ordered me again. I refused, standing before him with my arms crossed across me just like the adults did. The third time he stepped within arms reach of me and ordered again, only this time the 5 year old responded with the words that I overheard when he was just as angered. I flatly told him, "Bull S___t!" My grandma snatched me out of harms way just in the nick of time, but boy did she lecture me about language and rebellion, and that Dad was the head of the house and should be respected no matter how unfair his orders were. That still didn't cut it with me, but from then on I made sure that I wasn't around much to be erroneously ordered again. 9. Lie Detectors. Indigos are natural lie detectors and can see through the veil of deceit unlike any other. We know when we are being lied to and resent it! This can also add to the anger and rage in life. Because of our powerfully observant nature, we know when people or whomever or whatever are being untruthful, and it really pushes our buttons when it is harmful to others. Because of that intuitiveness we are quite intolerant of forceful marketing techniques and are extremely hard to con. If we are conned or taken advantage of in this manner, it will only happen once and we'll spot an adversary in a heartbeat from then on, and will joyfully strip them of their game even in front of others. (This is a trait that need to be removed from our lives as soon as possible, but only knowledge will let us remove it.) Rule of thumb: When an Indigo wants to know something, simply don't lie to them. Instead, take time to give an honest answer, or even research the answer with them and you will gain their undying respect for ever. 10. Psychic and/or Intuitiveness. Indigos are very, very sensitive, starting at a young age. They can have premonitions, see angels or ghosts, even have out of the body experiences. They commune with the higher dimensions because that's where they function from. I go into this more in the article about the Ninth Chakra. They show an early interest in spiritual matters and are extremely intuitive and may show an acute awareness of other dimensions and parallel realities. This also adds to our inborn lie-detector. And because we have the ability of higher dimensional thining, we see things that are farther out there than what others see. As one person said, we think in decades, not days. 11. School / Educational System. Indigos, as was said earlier, are very bright, and more than often have high IQ's. They more than likely will not have top grades because of their lack of interest in the mundane and will often be called an underachiever. They can't stand repetitious tasks like those required in school, and when they branch off they often get into trouble. Because of our problem with Authority figures, we often get rebellious in school and refuse to go with the flow and do the required homework. We often find other ways of rebelling in school, by pulling silly antics, being the goof-ball, and so on. We often find ways of hiding our real knowledge by hiding behind a veil of humour. Again, this is often misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder because we have trouble concentrating on boring assigned tasks. We often jump around in conversations also, but we always know what we want to say and why it's important. Quite often we are the ones who ask the so called stupid questions, especially if we know that the answer will help a friend who is too afraid to ask the question. This relates to our empathy attitude. Indigos also can't wait to get out of school, and ending the whole long boring 12 year process. Once out of school however, we often excel in the realm of self-educating because we do it at a pace that suits us, which is high speed and more diverse than any teacher could ever understand. The Internet has opened up a whole new realm to the Indigos and we can follow our interests as intensely and passionately as we want. Quaite often, an Indigo adult will return to school but by then they have usually learned more about themselves and want to better themselves, but school will still be a boring process for the most part. If you want your Indigo child to excel in school, then take them out of it and do home-schooling. You can set a pace equal to their high speed minds which will keep them interested. By the way, did you know that home-schooled youngsters do much better on tests and are more sought after by Universities than regular schooled kids? I hated kindergarten. I wanted to do and learn things since it was the first time I was allowed out into the world, even if it was only to go to school. I was ready to experience anything new. Needless to say, I was always in trouble, and things like forcing me to lie down and take a nap at noon was like demanding that I cut off my right arm. And playing with gargantuan blocks was ridiculous. I wanted to know about life and had great expectations about school, but they were quickly replaced with anger and resentment. On my way to school I'd ride my bike through the University of Redlands college campus (So. California) and always stop off at the science department where, among other things, I learned about the stages of fetal development from inception to birth. They had the fetuses in large bottles at every stage of the process and it absolutely intrigued me. My Mom even freaked out when I told her all about the baby she had inside of her tummy, my soon to be little brother. By third grade I had a profound grasp on our educational system and was counting down the days until I could leave it all behind me. I never did learn how to do long math. The teachers demanded to see the problems worked out on paper and I would get D's and F's because I couldn't. But my answers were always right. I was always forced to sit in the back of the class because the teachers couldn't stand my arms waving around to answer all the questions. Instead, they called on others and gave me low grades because they said I was disruptive. Because of the labeling, I grew isolated and the other kids picked up on the teachers exasperation of me and they too teased and taunted me, but I never lost track of the day I'd be free of the nightmare. I hated school! Later, when pursuing college I discovered this great thing called testing out of classes. I still had to pay the course fees, et al, but I'd take the test, ace it and violá, I had the grade! By the time I was nearly done with my Masters (Science) all I had to do was a few lab courses because there was no way to test out of them but they went quickly. I virtually did the same for my Doctorate (Cognitive Science). 12. Depression / Alienation / Frustration / Drugs / Alcohol. Many Indigos, because of being misunderstood, might experience existential depression and/or feelings of helplessness. This can range from sadness to despair, even to the point of suicidal feelings while still in high school or before. They can be extremely emotionally sensitive, to include crying at the drop of a hat because they haven't yet learned how to shield themselves (energy work and/or boundaries), or they might show no emotion at all due to extreme shielding. This internal conflict and disgust with ‘the system' often leads the Indigo to experiment with drugs or alcohol at an early age. I remember when I was about 10 years old and at a funeral. I didn't understand why everyone was crying. It was so clear to me that the deceased was in a much better place than we were. Then someone walked up to the coffin and cried, "He looks so good." I nearly got killed because I blurted, "He's dead for God's sake! How can he look good, he's not even here!" No, I wasn't on drugs or booze, nor was I having any internal conflict. I just knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the deceased was long gone, and all that crying didn't do a thing for him. As the Indigo gets older they might see the political, educational, medical and legal systems as failures, broken or totally ineffective, which also can lead to depression of varying levels. Because of that, they might also feel that no matter what they say their voice won't be herd or heeded, because the outcome simply doesn't even matter. Because of that they might alienate and/or isolate themselves. "What's the Point? What's it Matter? Things are so screwed up anyway!" To the Indigo, quite often the so called American Dream is something to be avoided because it is boring, dull and a waste of time, because remember, they experienced it as a kid and could care less about repeating the pattern themselves. But, anger usually results from not being able to fit in with what everyone else obviously enjoys. Because Indigos see things from a higher perspective, they see human rights being stripped from everyone and can become irate or enraged even at it. This develops a dissident, sometimes cynical outlook on life. All Indigos have a highly developed sense that probably 90% of what's reported on the media is not necessarily the truth and is instead what ‘the media' want us to know. We see it as manufactured nonsense to divert the public, and we seek the 10% that's not discussed. Therein lies the real story, the truth. Without a role model or teacher early in life, we often do not learn the proper shielding techniques to protect ourselves. This can also be called boundaries. Because of that, the Indigo will often resort to the use of drugs or alcohol to 'numb out and quiet' the worldly chatter. 13. Religion / Spirituality. Indigos have a well honed sense of spirit and of a Higher Source. Because of that, we are constantly seeking the higher meaning and understanding of the world around us. But because others don't see things like us, we are convinced that it is us who are lost. Then we seek help via organized religion, Metaphysics, spiritual groups, and so forth, and because we are prolific readers we will often have an extensive library of self help books as well. But all these things are but mere tools to bring us up to where we rightfully belong. 14. Work. Because Indigos resist/resent authority, they naturally abhor the caste system of employment and they have difficulty in service-oriented jobs, unless they can of course talk and laugh with the patrons. That's rarely allowed which then repels the Indigo. They will find happiness in jobs that are more creative or right brained than left brained. See para 1 above for clarification on this. Indigos find it extremely hard to work in a sales position, or anywhere they might be forced to lie about or give a false sense about a product. 15. Sexuality. Indigos are most comfortable sharing and experiencing on a soul-to-soul level, therefore sex is not as important to them as it is to others. However, when they are involved in a sexual relationship, Indigos are usually very expressive and intimate, and can even be quite inventive. On the flip side of the coin, they might completely reject sexuality because it might get boring for them, and instead look to achieve a higher spiritual connection instead. Some might even explore alternate types of sexuality, just like they explore alternate education via their search for meaning in life. The key to a good and lasting sex life and partnership with an Indigo is that they must be 100% respected and connected with or they will use sex as a form of control until they are totally bored with the whole thing and then move on. Sex to an Indigo is usually on the lower rung of things in life because their main concern is the soul, and sex can too easily leave them feeling empty and alone. This is also why they often reject the so-called American Dream. Although they will quite often try to fit in with the norm by getting married, etc, they most often will end up divorced and/or single unless of course they are partnered with another Indigo. Indigos are the epitome of spiritual androgyny because they are in balance with both their male and female aspects of the body, therefore, sex is nearly unimportant as they awaken to their higher calling. 16. Sense of Humour. The Indigo has a tremendous sense of humour and unique ability to entertain, even on the family scale. They also use their funniness as a shield to keep others out. They feel safer not letting people in, to include friends, family, parents, you name it. As we get older, our humour can be somewhat obscured by our cynicism but we will never lose it, in fact, it quite often develops to a very sarcastic form of humour and is used to protect us. When it does that it's time to take a hard look at self because the most important trait of an Indigo is to not hurt anyone, and to stay clear of the trappings of judgement. 17. Balance. Finding balance for an Indigo can be a very disconcerting endeavor. After all, we live in a higher realm in our minds and hearts, and trying to fit in with society is something we rebel over. We feel deep inside that we can't get up where we belong, because it isn't on an earthly realm. Until we discover what our mission or purpose is in this life, and believe me we will be driven to uncover that unlike anyone else, we will search, dream, speculate, and experience situations that is not always for our higher good. And these life experiences are what also add to our tremendous compassion for others. In general we will be miserable and unfulfilled until we find the balance it takes to live in this world. We sometimes feel forced to find a balance between a place we call ‘there' and a place we call ‘here', or in other words, the middle of the road, or that destructive gray area. That's the place we abhor with all our being. Remember, there is no middle of the road for an Indigo. Just remember, the balance we really seek, is in applying the teachings of ‘there' to the life of ‘here' and to find the peace in so doing. Finding balance will allow Indigos to be very healthy, happy individuals. 18. Interesting Quirks. I don't know where else to put this information, so it's here. Indigos quite often don't wear watches because they won't work right, or just plain cease to work. Sometimes street lights go off as an Indigo moves under them. Electrical equipment malfunctions when an Indigo is around them. Light bulbs blow out when an Indigo is near them. Many like speculative fiction, science fiction, fantasy, role-playing games, and other aspects of fantasy or sci-fi. They tend to ‘escape' with good books, to include techno- thrillers, suspense, etc. or anything that is intellectually stimulating and challenging. Role playing games also help us get out of ourselves, especially to help us remove ourselves from a painful adolescence. We have excellent pattern detection and recognition faculties, which goes hand in hand with our observant/aware natures. It also makes us good problem and puzzle solvers and troubleshooters, which contrary to the norm, is a right brain function. Indigos see the big picture, even when they are children. Picky, picky, picky: Indigos are super aware of the feel and sense of anything, be it music, food, scent, colour or any other form of sensualistic expression. Very little, if anything, escapes their notice. Because of this they end up being very sensitive to strong odors, chemicals, heat, cold, noise, crowds, etc. They like soft clothing that feels like their own skin in a manner of speaking. They like perfumes that are not always in the norm, but are pleasant. Money isn't of that much importance, but the Indigo has the ability to amass vast amounts of it. They like a comfortable home and surroundings, and more than anything, peace. And as for money, they will use it to help others as often as they can. Adult Indigos are often connoisseurs of what is called sense-dense items like perfumes, art, music, food, clothing. Indigos have an uncanny ability of learning, using and/or understanding different languages, especially without formal training. It's as if the Indigo hears the mind of the speaker and the spoken language is not of any importance. This applies to understanding animals and nature also. There is also a much higher knowledge to sound that an awakened Indigo fully understands. Many Indigos are left-handed, and/or ambidextrous. Again, they are super right brained in this realm of existence, and are forced to function left-brained, Earth's realm of existence (at least for now anyway). Indigos can easily alter their personality to suit whomever they must communicate or work with if need be. Remember, their second nature is communications. Indigos often prefer the company of our peers than to be in a group of people who are not fellow Indigos. We also thrive on our ‘alone time' which is where we recharge our spiritual batteries. If we retreat, be it in an office, our home, our bedroom or while driving, etc., it's because the busy-ness or energy of the world is overwhelming. Because of an Indigos sense of self-peace, others find them attractive. Even though they love their solitude, they are still popular with their peers. This goes hand in hand with their fun sense of humour, natural spiritual charisma, and even their instinctual wisdom. If at parties or social gatherings they often become the center of attention, whether they want to or not. Indigos will often attract ‘lost souls' who need someone to care and listen to them, then who in turn helps them break free of their dilemma. This includes attracting other Indigos who are on the verge of awakening also. Awakened Indigos are not dogmatic nor are they egotistic. They live their lives with a higher knowing that guides them, are eager to talk about spiritual subjects, and are gentle and compassionate people who know that there are here to help in whatever way they can. Indigos thrive on deep sleep. It doesn't necessarily have to be long sleep, but deep is the key word. If they are awakened too soon it is usually hard to get back to sleep. If we are awakened too suddenly or unnecessarily we can indeed be a bit ornery. When awakening an Indigo, do as you would with anyone, do it gently and respectfully. Indigos dislike conflict and quarreling. It's difficult for an Indigo child to know how to have peace and harmony other than steering clear of conflict, which can make others angry because they don't understand that it's simply the only way the Indigo knows how to enjoy the stillness. As an adult, we seek the isolation of solitude for that peace and harmony. Because most Indigos function from the Ninth Chakra, they are naturally drawn to the supernatural, metaphysical, and both scientific and spiritual understanding. If they get involved with the occult, or any faith requiring ritual habits or practices, they will soon tire and move on, because they know that ritual isn't necessary to accomplish what they can accomplish with their mind. 19. Mission. Because the Indigo has such a higher developed sense of purpose they are driven to do something, anything to improve things for people. For the most part, people don't like comparing themselves to the Master's of days gone by, but the Indigos came here exactly for that purpose, to be the Masters of now. Not to rule people, but to help humanity shift into a higher state of consciousness. Read more in the Purpose Section. For an abbreviated list of this page, please go to Indigo Traits.
